TARRAWINGEE was forced to work harder than expected to secure its seventh win of the season, coming from behind in the third quarter to defeat King Valley by 24 points.
The Bulldogs had a fight on their hands from the outset, with the Roos turning the first quarter into something of a shootout.
But it was during the third quarter that King Valley really turned up the heat, piling on six goals in quick time as Daniel Bruce, Richard Castles and Jono Rea won the bulk of the clearances.
The Roos got out to an 11-point lead before Tarrawingee, inspired by the efforts of young wingman Lachie Drummond, hit back with the final three goals of the period to establish a seven-point buffer.
From there it was business as usual at the Kennel, with the Bulldogs putting the clamps on the Roos and running out 15.17 (107) to 12.11 (83) winners.
It was the first time this season that an opposition side has kicked more than seven goals against Tarrawingee, and coach Trevor Edwards said the Roos’ midfield strength and forward depth had made it a tough game to win.
“Any time you have a forward line that contains blokes like Hayden Murray, Brendan Sessions, Mitch Coonan and Zac Blackshaw, you know they’re going to be capable of kicking a winning score,” Edwards said.
“It was crucial that we won the midfield battle, and King Valley’s goals generally came in bursts when they were getting on top in the middle.”
