AN eight-goal opening quarter blitz laid the foundation for the Ovens and King senior football team’s 29-point triumph over the Tallangatta and District league on Saturday.
In front of a good crowd at the WJ Findlay Oval, the O&K ‘Green Machine’ was well oiled and firing on all cylinders early thanks to the dominance of ruckman Brent Newton and Kaine Herbert in the middle, and Corey Smith in attack.
While the TDFL was first to hit the scoreboard, with pocket rocket Ryan Wallace gathering the loose ball and putting it through the big sticks, the Greens soon hit back with a withering burst.
First it was Jess Cosaitis taking a reflex grab from a Paul Glanville kick, before converting from close range.
Then the livewire Smith registered back-to-back majors – one a deadly accurate snap, the other a set shot from near the boundary line on the right flank.
Herbert was instrumental as the onslaught continued, getting the ball from Sam Evans to Jeremy Wilson for a goal, then a minute later hitting up Hayden Murray for another.
The Greens had banged on five goals in the space of seven minutes, and while Yackandandah star Trent Castles broke the run with one of his own at the other end, the O&K had more rounds in the chamber.
