BRIGHT’S chances of securing a finals berth in the Ovens and King reserves competition took a big hit on the weekend as the Mountain Men went down to Whorouly by seven points.
Despite inaccuracy, the Lions got off to a flying start in the opening term, building a 19-point buffer on the back of the efforts of Jeremy Ashton, Damien Ravida, Tim Ruaro, Will Corscadden and Tom Chettleburgh.
Bright hit back over the next two periods, with Ben Jones, Blaze Jordan, Mitch Banks, Daniel Sgambelloni, Jack Fraser and Nic Conway putting in the hard yards to see the Mountain Men draw within two points at the final change.
But the Lions did enough to hold sway over the last quarter and emerge 9.14 (68) to 9.7 (61) winners, moving up to fifth place on the ladder.
With Whorouly’s remaining five games all against sides in the bottom half of the ladder, a finals berth awaits.
But for Bright, which still has three of the top four to come, plus a tough trip to Bonnie Doon, the two-game gap to the top six looks a bridge too far.
