The Ovens and King Football Netball league has added some star quality to the upcoming Grand Final Breakfast with Collingwood premiership star Ben Reid announced as the guest speaker for the event this week.
Reid has been in talks with OKFNL officials over the past month but only now that Collingwood has bowed out of the AFL Finals Race could the league make his appearance official.
After securing the services of fellow AFL star and Wangaratta local Alipate Carlile last year, OKFNL general manager Jeremy Wilson said he was delighted Reid, a former Bright junior, had agreed to be the guest speaker for this season.
“Ben is a well-known person in both the Bright and Wangaratta communities,” he said.
“Being a former Bright and Wangaratta Rovers junior, Ben has plenty of friends and family in the OKFNL community.
“It’s been 10 years now since he joined the AFL system so he should be able to give us an insight into life at one of the biggest clubs in the game.
“It’ll be interesting to get his take on a few aspects of his career.”
Since making his debut in 2007, Reid has gone on to play 121 games with the Magpies while also botting 37 goals.
Reid was a key part of the Magpies’ 2010 premiership and was an All-Australian in 2011 before persistant soft tissues injuries threatened to derail his career.
However, 2016 has seen a return to the Reid of old as he has managed to play 17 games and provide strength to the Magpies’ young backline.
The OKFNL Grand Final Breakfast will also include Hall of Fame inductions, players receiving life membership as well as a wrap-up of the league’s interleague success and volunteer of the year awards.
