2004 Ian Bakens was re-elected President, Wayne Huglin Vice President, Joanne Apps Secretary, Maree De George Treasurer, general committee of 8 and social committee of three. Once again the Senior flag eluded us but the Reserves flag was some consolation and the under 18's were thereabouts having a go in two of the finals. Over the past several seasons South Belgrave Football Club have gained many great sponsors and the club is indebted to them for their continuing support. Everyone involved in South Belgrave Football Club should be justly proud of the consistently good performances we have been able to achieve over the past few years. The challenge for all of us is to keep positive, build on the foundations and work a little harder and smarter to attain our goal. Socially there were some really great and financially great, functions and others not so good and lessons have been learnt. A well publicized social calendar is an absolute must if events are to be successful. Financially the draw and teams forfeiting was a huge downer this season and many players and supporters were not around the club very often. Despite the lack of improving finances the new ground lighting was wired up by Mark Peel and the team at MRP Electrical - the folding already put away for this project. With new Gym equipment, ruck bags, goal post padding and a new projector our social rooms and ground are a pleasure to visit. Best Clubperson was Awarded to Danny Wills. There were no Life Memberships nominated.
Darren Linkins, well known around our Club having played with the Vets for some years, was appointed Senior Coach with Trent Pitts assisting. We were down on numbers this year with only 48 senior players to slot into two teams but the training staff were up there with the best keeping players on the track. This year we lost the Grand Final against Gembrook although we did beat them in Round 13 by 23 points. They were ladder leaders all year finishing one win better than us in the end. We had 12 wins 3 losses and 3 byes in a 7-team 2nd Division competition. Playing in the 2nd semi Gembrook stamped themselves well and truly into the Grand Final with an emphatic win of 73 points and we were looking down the barrel.
However playing Emerald in the Prelim we bounced back with a win of 12.13. 85 to Emerald 4.4.28 best players being Cameron Hedge, Andrew Punton, Alex Bakens and Clint Lantsbery. Alex managed 3 goals, Wayne Diegan and Noel White 2 each, Doug Griffiths, Casey Myers, David Sutton, Paul McCrae and Leigh Scholes 1 each.
In the Grand Final Gembrook went into the game as warm favourites and did not disappoint their supporters, finishing 16.10.106 to South 7.8.50. We were up by one goal at the first change, kept scoreless in the second with Gembrook gaining a lead of 14 points. At orange time they led by 29points and were never headed from this point on. Leigh Scholes topped the goals with 2 while Wayne Deigan, Clint Lantsbery, Trent Pitts, Paul McRae, and Richie Fahie kicked 1 each. Best players were Cameron Hedge, Richie Fahie, and Adrian Porto.
On a far more pleasant note Shane Kennedy coached the Reserves side to a great Premiership but it was not done that easily. When numbers were down mid season we had to call on retired veterans and under 18's to help out but still won every game to finish on top ahead of Gembrook whose only losses were against us. Emerald easily accounted for Seville in the first Semi. The first quarter of the Second Semi was off to a great start but in the 2nd Gembrook managed 7 goals to our 3 leaving us a couple shy at the long break. At orange time they were four goals ahead and our boys would have been a bit worried. The last quarter was a titanic struggle, South kicking 4.3 and holding Gembrook to just 1 goal. Final scores Gem 15.8.98 to South 14.12.96 and a tad disappointed we head for the Preliminary Final against the Bombers. As it happened Emerald offered little resistance and we cleaned up 11.14.80 to 4.4.28. Having won the 2nd semi by just two points Gembrook were certainly not what you would call firm favourites in this match. The weeks' break was the only thing in their favour, although we were on a roll! From the opening bounce of the game we moved into top gear and with a focused and determined attack on the ball, dominated possession and scored quickly to put Gembrook under enormous pressure. Teffa O'Meara was superb in the ruck while Kozina and Sutto were ferocious at ground level getting the ball into the forward line regularly. Mark Rogerson marked brilliantly in the square kicking 2 goals with Ash Evenden also chipping in for another two. We were 3 goals up at quarter time and in the second Gembrook exerted some pressure but our backline in Luke O'Neill, Gary Walters, Matt Clarebrough, Warren O'Connor and Tim Mellett held up well and we went into the long break maintaining our 3 goal lead. In the third term our game rose a notch, keeping Gembrook goalless while raising the two flags down the other end five times. Captain Des Fitzsimmons was well supported in the backline by Carlo Clauss, Danny Dreier, and Grinners Huglin. Danny Madden used his blistering pace on a wing and Dave McLennan roved beautifully to kick two majors. Ari Shearer and Luke Kerger were also in great form. Gembrook doubled their score in the last quarter while keeping us to just one major but we cruised to an easy six goal victory. Craig Kozina was voted best on ground. The final score for South's Premiership was 12.9.81 to Gembrook 6.8.44.
Chris Huglin took the under 18's in a 12-team combined competition finishing in 7th spot with 9 wins and 9 losses. 12 of their games were on the road and only 6 on home soil. Early in the season we struggled to the point of not having an interchange bench. After 6 games with a different training program in place there were more players available. The two finals appearances were a bitter/sweet experience - turning a defeat by Warburton in the last game to victory in the first final was a highlight for the season (10.11 71 to 8.9.57) and the next final against Healesville which we dominated for much of the day to be over-run in the last 5 minutes was extremely disappointing.
Healesville 0.1 0.4 2.9 5.12 (42)
South 1.2 3.5 4.5 5.6 (36)
Best players were Matthew Robinson, Brad Conder, Chris Scorah and Phillip Imfeld and goals came from Phillip Imfeld 2, Matt Robinson, Dave Whitmore, and Brad Conder 1 each.
The veterans decided not to continue playing this season.

2005 Once again Ian Bakens backs up with Wayne Huglin 2nd in command, Secretary Joanne Apps, Treasurer Maree DeGeorge, general committee of 8 and social committee of 3. The major improvement to the Reserve was rubberized paving in front of the social rooms and changerooms and what a godsend was this in the middle of a muddy Belgrave South winter. As an off-shoot there is now more of a congregation of supporters and children in this paved area which is close to the canteen and bar! Despite a large turnover of players we were able to retain that competitive edge with some good new recruits. Seniors and Reserves played off in the Grand Final while the unders just snuck into the eight. The League commenced a Netball competition to play on the same day as competing football teams and a Yarra Valley Cougars Female Football Club also commenced and played off in the finals in their first season. South did not have a Netball Team this season but one of our girls played for the Cougars. Ian, in his third year as President would say at the end of the season that his biggest disappointment over this period was not to have cracked a senior flag despite being extremely competitive. To be up at the top we need a functioning and committed social club and from the players point of view we must "raise the bar" - more commitment and determination prior to game day would be a good start. If we intend to play against 1st Division teams we must at the very least beat those 1st Division sides that are relegated to 2nd Division.
The senior side was again coached by Darren Linkins who finished with a win/loss ratio of 11/5 and in 2nd position, a game behind Olinda. In fact our first loss for the season was against Olinda in Round 4, both teams square at half time but Olinda kicked on in the third term to retain that lead to the final siren and we lost by 13 points. A disappointing loss occurred at Powelltown where we went down to the home side by another 13 points. Coming into round 11 we're 2 games down and facing Olinda in the second half of the season. Olinda was well on top in this game handing out a thrashing of 80 points. We dropped another game by 6 points in round 16 at Seville and had Olinda in the hills on the last round to go down by 25 points. So come finals time we can see that Olinda have had our measure throughout the season and would be firm favourites for the flag. All of this would alter in the 2nd Semi at Yarra Junction. We were out of the blocks early in the first and forged ahead at every change to finish the game 48 points up 18.9.117 to 10.9. 69. Goal kickers had a field day - Todd Burley with 4, Alex Bakens 3, Rob Cockerell 2, Chris Koski 2 and Adam Punton, Mark Rogerson, Leigh Scholes, Peter Torcasio, Richie Fahie, Kris Abaloz all 1 each. It was hard to find a bad player on the day. In the first Semi, Seville easily accounted for Powellie and subsequently were over-run by Olinda in the Prelim. The Grand Final was played at Gembrook and although fine it was very cold. Olinda's firm favouritism has now gone out to "this game will go down to the wire". Unfortunately it was not to be and for the third year in a row we would be stripped of glory going down 18.17.125 to 11.5.71
Yet again Shane Kennedy coached the twos to top of the ladder and another flag. Seville in 2nd position were thereabouts so we weren't having it all our own way, however the second semi was a whitewash winning by almost 70 points. Seville would easily account for Olinda in the Preliminary Final and return the following week against the Sainters in the Grand Final at Gembrook. The South Reserves cleaned up for another wonderful Premiership 22.14.146 to Seville 7.5.47 with best on ground awarded to Craig Kozina for the second consecutive year. Kozi also won the 2nd Division Reserves Best and Fairest with 17 votes. Other players to shine in the Grand Final were Chris Beardshaw, Stephen O'Meara and Thomas Wulz while the goals were booted by Wayne Diegan, Thomas Wulz 5 each, Jamie Campbell, Michael Huglin, 2 each, Craig Kozina, Michael Lowe, Dave McLennan, Casey Myers, Shane Cody, Chris Beardshaw, Shane Brockwell, and Doug Griffiths all 1 each.
Our under 18's, coached again by Chris Huglin finished in 8th position in a 12-team competition winning 7, losing 11. In the first elimination final they faced 5th on the ladder, Monbulk who had finished with five more wins than us. Monbulk had plenty of the scoring in the first quarter kicking one goal six to zip and had we been able to score just one goal in this term we would have won the game! Final Scores were Monbulk 4.16.40 to South 5.5.35 with our best players being Brendan Tibballs, Callan Gatti, Danny Clarke and Joshua Vinen. David Whitmore kicked 2 and Danny Clarke, Dean Bromley, Adam Richards 1 each.
The Club performed well in the 2nd Division goal kicking with Alex Bakens winning the seniors on 54, Todd Burley in fifth with 43. While in the Reserves Jamie Campbell won on 50, Wayne Deigan 2nd on 46 and Casey Myers 6th on 27.

2006 The AGM once again provided little joy since there was no one prepared to take on the President's role. Ian Bakens would act in the interim "until someone is found" and saw the year out!! Wayne Huglin continued as Vice President, Michelle Walters secretary, Joanne Apps treasurer with 3 on general committee. Behind the scenes of course there were many helping hands.
Late in 2005 our club had reason to believe we might struggle for some of the 2006 September action. For the first time in their history Warburton/Millgrove were relegated to 2nd division and a determination by them to return to 1st division was obvious. As a result Powelltown went into recession. Both Thornton-Eildon and Alexandra were admitted to 2nd division and expected to be very competitive. The Seniors had played in the Grand Final for the past 3 seasons without Premiership glory and some of our very good young players were looking elsewhere for better competition - Dusty to Knox, Todd and Brad Conder to Coburg and Dave Whitmore to Lilydale. Adding to this drama, late in January our selected coach found he would not be able to take up the position and we had to sit down coolly to decide on another option. Ultimately Life Member, Shane Brockwell took on the position and amongst some controversy several members decided not to support the club to the full as they had in the past.
Overall not the ideal start towards a successful season.
Shane was assisted by Chris Huglin with the Senior side. As usual numbers at training early in the year were very low, commencing with a core group of 10 but by seasons' start had a competitive unit. Some power talks managed to retain captain Alex Bakens. The first game against Emerald was a good confidence builder but next we fell against newcomer Thornton-Eildon and it became obvious we had a lot more work to do. The turning point came after our round 10 away win against Alexandra with our young players standing up and our big guns firing. We followed this with 5 wins, 2 losses and a draw to sneak into fourth spot and a first semi berth against Yarra Junction. Despite losing by just 6 points this turned out to be a very close high scoring game which we probably lost in the first quarter. Our best players were "Tef" O'Meara, Mark Rogerson, Shane Brockwell, and Craig Kozina and goal kickers - Mark Rogerson 6, Richie Fahie, Brodie O'Loughlan 3, Alex Bakens, Shane Brockwell 2, Rob Cockerell, Leigh Bennett, Kahil Saliba, Brendan Tibballs and Jamie Campbell 1 each.
Yarra Junction 6.3 11.6 16.9 21.12.138
South 3.0 10.1 15.3 21.6.132
All things considered, this was a great result and provides a little more confidence as we head towards 2007.
The reserves coached by Stuart Alford was a huge job requiring plenty of assistance. Around 100 players over 18 games - almost 5 new players each game! Captain Jamie Campbell notched up his 300th game for the club in round 15 - a great player who has never lost his touch. We finished the season in 5th on 7/11 which was also a great result considering the lack of consistent numbers.
The Under 18's came home with the bacon. Coached by Life Member, Ross Colby who first played with the club some 33 years ago, with assistance from Anthony Vantilburg, Val Comelli, Simon Trickey and Frank Moss this was a great close-knit group numbering 31 players. Their pre-season even commenced with a trip to Briagalong. Although ably captained by Jake Fletcher, Danny Clarke deserves special mention winning the League and Club Best and Fairest awards and was adjudged Best on Ground in the Grand Final. The competition was somewhat enhanced with the addition of Alexandra. We finished the season on 10/5 losses in 3rd spot. In the first semi Warbi defeated Alexandra while in the 2nd semi Yarra Junction defeated us 11.9.75 to 9.7.61 with Callan Gatti 3, Robbie Huxtable, Ryan Williams 2 each, Josh Vinen and Braden Zaal 1 each. Best for the Saints Danny Clarke, Paul Gladman, Paul Lowe, and Callan Gatti. However in the Prelim against Warbi it was a different story with our boys running out easy winners by 32 points - 10.8.68 to 4.12.36. Our better players on this occasion were Grant Evenden, Danny Clarke, Jake Fletcher and Josh Vinen. Goals Robbie Huxtable 4, Callan Gatti 2, Paul Gladman, Matthew Jones-Bates, Chris Nikcevich, and Josh Vinen 1 each.
The Grand Final match between South and Yarra Junction was an incredibly tight affair played on the wide open spaces of the Healesville super dome. A staunch Junction supporter said that we "out-coached" the eagles in the last quarter when they were kicking into a very strong breeze and our boys desperately kept the play bottled up in the scoreboard pocket, final scores being 6.9.45 to the Junction 5.11.41. Robbie Huxtable kicked 3, with Adam Richards, Eamonn Perry, and Paul Gladman 1 each. Best players were Paul Gladman, Grant Evenden, Jarryd Peterson and Danny Clarke.
Netball Report - Since most country football leagues run simultaneous netball games while their respective football teams are playing, our League commenced down this path in 2005. Some clubs even had "A" and "B" Grade sides this year. We were not able to organize a team last year but Di Brockwell had eleven girls up and running this year. Although seven were required for a game this proved difficult at some of the away games but at home there was always an excess. More commitment to the team from the club, wives, girlfriends, supporters and players will ensure we become far more competitive on game day and can look forward to having at least two teams competing some way down the track. This season was a learning curve which provided plenty of fun in a team atmosphere. Coral Bowen was thanked for umpiring and Marg Cockerell for scoring.
The Celebration of Sixty Years of continuous football in our community took place during the year. Leading up to that all-important weekend there were three main aims :-
1. To locate as many past players, committee, support staff, and supporters as possible and give them the opportunity to catch up with some of their mates. We have 790 confirmed addresses on file to date.
2. To produce a booklet which would detail the club's highs and lows over the sixty years, from memorabilia collected from all over the place and this document is the end result.
3. To update our photographic collection with new frames and as many names included as possible.
Robert Cusworth-Warner (more commonly Robbie twonames or RTN) became our historian extraordinaire and co-ordinated the weekend. He is continuing to collect more names, addresses, memorabilia and photographs to ensure that the next anniversary is even more successful than ever. Many thanks to Russell Jolley, John Colby, Jamie Campbell for their involvement and special recognition to Andrew Abson and his staff for last minute type-setting and printing of the original document.
The weekend of 1/7/06 will go down in our history as another great memory.

2007 With Alex transferring to EFL club Knox to join Dusty, Ian Bakens stepped down from the Presidential role whilst still retaining a keen interest in our comings and goings. David McLennan was subsequently elected to this position. A current player keeping the backline on their toes for around ten years, Dave had plenty of enthusiasm. Wayne Huglin remained as Vice president, as did Michelle Walters Secretary and Joanne Apps Treasurer. The smallish committee of 6 included 5 players which was a good thing except that more support from the older group on match days would have been appreciated. Due to severe drought conditions through 2006 and into summer we were unable to water the ground and it was not available for preseason training. The League advised all clubs as to which grounds could be shared but a little rain alleviated this situation in time for the start of the season proper. Jo took on the canteen and property steward as well as treasurer, so finances were in a healthy state at seasons end - profit for the season totaling $24470. Low rumblings regarding a possible move to EFL continued during the year which culminated in a special meeting in September at which members overwhelmingly voted to apply to join the EFL. (Future U18 personnel will be pleased not to leave home before 7.00am with a cut lunch and water bag to be at some place in the sticks for a 10.00am start.) Many helpers were recognized in the annual report and at the top of the list would be Ian Gladman at the BBQ on Thursday nights and every home game, and the Steele kids out in the open on the scoreboard - at least it was easier to climb up there this year! Many thanks also to Danny, Keiran and Jess for their professionalism as trainers.
Much renovation work took place in the off-season on the gymnasium. Despite the loss of Alex and two or three others we commenced the season with a reasonable list especially with some talented unders coming through. Richie Fahie and Mark Rogerson were joint captains of the senior side. Shane Brockwell, coaching and Chris Huglin assistant, put in another great season however it was not until round 4 vs Powelltown that the team found their feet and shortly after this, the injury list started to mount. The turning point was probably a one point loss to Junction in round 10 although we would still lose to the powerhouse sides of Thornton and Alex. Our last game was at Belgrave in front of a good crowd. Despite us losing by three goals Belgrave had to fight all the way and their frustrations were clearly evident. A little more dedication by two or three of our players in the second half of the season may have made a significant difference.
Reserves coach Stewie Alford and captain Jamie Campbell, had the unenviable job of slotting the rest of the players into a cohesive unit. But for a huge loss to Belgrave in the last game, we may have seen some finals action. Confidence appeared high, having won 4 of the last 5 games but we couldn't do a thing right on that day and finished in 6th spot with 7 wins, 8 losses and a draw and 4.5% adrift of 5th placed Emerald.
Following on from Premiership success in 2006, Ross Colby continued with the Under 18's assisted by Shane Kennedy, Jake Fletcher captain. Although premiership glory eluded them on this occasion they had a great season after a delayed start through lack of numbers. Belgrave was the only side to beat us at both outings, losing 5 games in total, winning 11 and sitting in 4th spot behind Emerald who had a far superior percentage.
The elimination final against Seville at Warby was almost a non event considering our earlier games and we cleaned up 14.11.95 to 6.10.46. Best were Danny Clarke (2), Glen Maxwell (4), Braden Zaal, Tyson Hughes (2) Ryan Williams (1) Frederik Nielsen, Corey Murphy, and captain Jake Fletcher, Other goals Callan Gatti (3) and Darren Kennedy (2).
The first semi would see us return to Warby against our neighbours who somehow lacked considerable firepower compared to both home and away games- maybe due to call ups to their senior side?
South 2.4 7.6 12.8 16.11.107
Belgrave 2.2 2.3 4.6 5.11.41
Best players were Braden Zaal, Rhett Comelli, Glenn Maxwell, Danny Clarke, Jake Fletcher, Darren Kennedy and Callan Gatti with 8 majors. Other goalkickers: Anthony TJ VanTilburg, Luke Pride, Glenn Maxwell, Marc Shorten, Corey Murphy, Braden Zaal, Darren Kennedy and Aaron Huggard all one each.
And we advanced to the preliminary final against Emerald at the Kilsyth ground. Unfortunately the Bombers were the better side from the start of proceedings and powered away. Our boys did offer some resistance in the third quarter but this could not be sustained and the damage had already been done.
Emerald 3.3 8.7 11.9 13.13.91
South 1.3 1.7 5.9 6.12.48
Darren Kennedy and Glenn Maxwell 2 goals each, Marc Shorten and Ethan Clasby 1 each. Best players were Danny Clarke, Braden Zaal, Corey Murphy, Ethan Clasby and Glen Maxwell.
One point of interest was that of Danny Clarke who played most games (10 ) in the Seniors polling 8 votes in the League Vote Count (our equal best with Rob Cockerell) while stilling racking up 11 votes in the Unders from 6 games - polled in every match except the first at Yarra Junction. Glenn Maxwell finished 3rd with 21 votes. In the Club award Danny finished 4th in the Senior count and amazingly 2nd from the same 6 games, in the unders behind Glenn Maxwell.
A Grade Netball - This was our second year of Yarra Valley Netball with Felicity O'Meara as captain and 12 games scheduled. Many margins were narrow and the girls may have done a little better than our 6th on the ladder - 3 wins and a draw, had we been able to turn the tables in two more games. Alexandra and Emerald were clearly the better sides in the competition. Thanks to Coral Bowen and Sally Huglin for umpiring and scoring respectively.
