Match Report
As the showers cleared we were greeted with another warm Sunday morning. This time we were back home at Wattie Watson. After a fantastic turn up at training on Friday and a great session the boys were keen to put on a good performance at home. Birthday big ‘Big Finn’ was given the captaincy for the day and proudly led the boys out onto the ground.
Q1 With the wind building from the North we needed to come out firing. Unfortunately we came out a little on the sluggish side. East Sandringham played particularly well into the wind and our backline of Hugo, Koby, Benji, Aidan W, Ben L and Charlie did well to only concede a solitary goal. Unfortunately our forwards rarely saw the ball.
Q2 With Koby moving into the Ruck and Henry into the midfield , Jimmy and Ben B lifting, the team took on a new impetus and the game moved up a notch into a fast flowing entertaining affair. With Mason on fire we managed 2 goals to Sandringhams’ 2 goals 2 points.
Q3 With the building wind behind us and some great work out of the midfield by Asher the midfielders managed to pump the ball forward repetitively with Orlando, Lucas, Jack, Michael, Max combining beautifully and the man of the moment Mason booting an amazing four goals for the quarter. The backline put in another great quarter holding East Sandringham scoreless with Hugo continually clearing the ball of the last line with some great run and carry.
During the quarter an East Sandringham player went down with a heavy knock. Fortunately he was Ok and continued to play. One of the first to go to and see how was going was Mason. This gesture of concern for his fellow player and act of sportsmanship was observed and acknowledged by the East Sandringham parents.
Q4 Carrying a three goal lead into the last we thought we were going to be singing our song come the siren. Despite some good running from Jack and Benji in the backline, a fantastic last quarter by effort by East Sandringham, with the strong wind at their backs, all of a sudden the boys were flat footed and one point down with only a minute to go. Birthday boy Finn took it upon himself to take off on a couple of surging rugby like runs and followed with some long kicking into the wind. These surges with Aidan L and Asher combining well almost created a scoring opportunity however we were to be denied and Sandringham held on to win by that solitary point.
Football cards were given by our Captain to No 2 from the East Sandringham team for his play on the day and the team munched on their snakes during the wrap up. A great day was had by all.
Well done to Michael with his umpiring, fantastic sportsmanship by Mason and once again well done to the boys.
