Match Report
It was great to catch up with so many at La Porchetta after training on Friday night. Game days can be a bit of a ‘whirlwind of organisation’ so I think everyone enjoyed kicking back, having a chat and sharing football and non football conversations with each other.
Game day, winter has finally arrived! A wet football day away to East Malvern greeted us. The only saving grace was the slightly later start (10am), hope you all caught a few extra Zzzzzs.
Q1 City started well with Campbell fighting hard in the ruck and giving lots of supply to the midfielders. Benji, Asher, Mason, Josh and Beppe all fought hard constantly pumping the ball into our forward line. Cooper and Aidan L were able to capitalise on this, each scoring a goal. East Malvern had some standout players however our backline held firm and only conceded a solitary major. Going into quarter time the excitement was palpable amongst the boys as they urged each other on after a fantastic first quarter effort, seeing us go to the break 1 goal up.
Q2 The second quarter was a real seesawing affair where both teams scored a goal apiece early (another lovely goal to Aidan L) however the second half of the second quarter saw our backline under siege. They fought bravely led outstandingly by Group Leader Henry, with some great man on man defence from Lucas, strong running play off the flank from Jimmy, clever defensive kicking out from Hugo and great marking by Ben Brunner. The backs managed to harass, stop or interfere with East Malvern’s many goal scoring opportunities seeing East Malvern pile on 7 points (many rushed). When the siren sounded for half time scores were level!
Q3 The third quarter is often called the premiership quarter. For the last few weeks now we have fallen away in this quarter and unfortunately this was to happen again. The midfielders, most notably Asher and Michael fought hard, the big body East Malvern players really started to get on top and apply lots of pressure to our back six with constant entries. The backline fought hard however weight of numbers saw the opposition kick four goals. Our forward line made the most of limited opportunities with Josh, Max, Finn, Mason and Jack competing well allowing Cooper to snap a couple of great goals on the run. At the final break we were still in with a chance only a couple of goals down.
Q4 The boys had played and competed really well all day. During the last break Blake urged them all to one last effort. Finn and Mason moved into the midfield and provided some good grunt work against the bigger East Malvern players and fought gallantly. Our forward line made the most againof limited opportunities and Aidan L managed 1 goal 1 in the last quarter. In the end a talented East Malvern team managed to run the game out better, despite the great efforts put in by our boys, and they turned a close game into a comfortable victory. Regardless and despite the weather a great day was had by all.
