Two of the state’s top netballers – Melbourne Vixen Caitlin Thwaites and Victorian Fury’s Karyn Bailey – will inspire local netballers when they visit Wangaratta this weekend.
In a special fundraising event organised by the Greta Football Netball Club, the players will appear at the Wangaratta Indoor Sports and Aquatic Centre (WISAC), Shilling Drive, from 10am to 12pm on Saturday 13 February 2010.
During the two-hour session at the indoor courts, Thwaites and Bailey will run skills clinics, share their experiences playing netball at an elite level, and answer questions from enthusiastic young players.
Organiser Bec Mulrooney from Greta Football Netball Club says the players’ visit is a coup for Wangaratta.
“We are so lucky to have access to these two talented players,” she said.
“Both are brilliant goalers, and have significant experience playing at an elite level.”
Co-organiser Jodi O’Keeffe, also from Greta Football Netball Club, said all sport fans – not just netballers – would benefit from the event.
“I strongly encourage all local players, coaches, umpires, school children and supporters to come down and make the most of this great opportunity,” she said.
Netball Victoria Development Officer Kate O’Connor says events like these are inspiring for young players, and important for the overall development of the game.
“These girls know how to work hard, and get the best out of themselves and their sport,” she said.
“By talking to players like Caitlin and Karyn, we can learn – not just what it’s like to compete at the top level – but how to stay active and, overall, enjoy this great game.”
People are encouraged to book for the event, with showbags full of items like swim passes, wristbands and magnets to be handed out to the first 100 bookings.
Entry is $5, and any money raised on the day will go towards upgrading Greta’s netball court and change facilities, enabling them to continue playing in the Ovens & King Football Netball League.
