THE $2.9 million Wangaratta Showgrounds upgrade remains on track, according to Browns Wangaratta Builders construction manager Dennis Backas.
Although Ovens and King Football League last week decided to switch its September grand final from the Showgrounds to the adjacent WJ Findlay Oval due to spectator comfort and accessibility concerns, Mr Backas said the project was progressing well.
And he questioned whether there was a need to have moved the grand final.
"There is no hold up as far as we're concerned," he said yesterday.
"Any delay was in the (Rural City of Wangaratta) council awarding the tender.
"We didn't start until the end of May, and from day one I said it would be six months of building works.
"So this shouldn't be giving the impression that the builder is running behind."
Mr Backas, who is president of the Showgrounds committee of management (through which the ground is booked), said he was disappointed the OandK committee had not enquired about where the project would be situated by September.
He said the first he knew of the venue change, after five consecutive OandK grand finals held at the Showgrounds, was via email last Thursday.
