In the end, it was a scenario that came out of the blue.
Moyhu's Baker Medal quinella, with Nathan Waite finishing two votes clear of teammate Jaimon McGeehan, added further glory to the Hoppers' brilliant 2011 season.
Waite was the hot favorite for the medal early in the year after a scintillating run of form, but an injury riddled back half of the season saw him drop off the radar.
And with fellow Hopper Ryan Craig dominating in the middle, utility McGeehan wasn't expected to poll as well as he has previously despite enjoying another outstanding year.
Earlier in the night Waite won the league's Rising Star award as the best player at 21 and under.
He was stunned to have claimed that trophy, let alone the league medal.
"I thought with injury and everything else I was no chance," Waite said.
"I really didn't expect this at all.
"I was happy just to make team of the year.
"I wasn't even thinking about the Rising Star, let alone this (Baker Medal).
"I guess it adds to my resume not many people get to win the league medal.
