SHOULD Ned Kelly's remains be laid to rest at Greta Cemetery where his mother is buried?
The question is now being asked after an 80 year old mystery was solved yesterday with the confirmation a body exhumed from the grounds of Pentridge Prison in 2009 is in fact Ned's.
Most of Ned's skull is missing from the remains, but the discovery is being hailed as a major moment in Kelly history.
Questions have now turned to where Ned's body should be laid to rest, with some calling for him to join his mother at Greta Cemetery.
The State Government has said Ned's family will be consulted about the appropriate future resting place of the remains, but one descendant said that would be a complex task.
Rural City of Wangaratta mayor Anthony Griffiths' great grandmother Grace was Ned's sister.
Cr Griffiths said he was surprised Ned's body had been found.
"I had really given up hope that they'd ever find them," he said.
As for where the body should be laid to rest, Cr Griffiths said "that's a very vexing question".
"It's not an easy grave to locate.
"There's a lot of pros and cons of where it should go because it will get a lot of public attention so it will need to be somewhere it can be appropriately managed.
"And somewhere safe so it can't be vandalised or stolen."
Cr Griffiths said Kelly descendants number into the thousands and have different views.
"It's fair to say there is no cohesive view of what should happen.
"It is a very difficult task, who has pre-emptive rights and who doesn't.
