WHOROULY has ended speculation over its vacant coaching position, with tough on-baller Brendan Roche (pictured) taking the reins.
Club president Alan McNeil said Roche was the standout among a quality list of applicants.
"We're just rapt to have signed Brendan he ticks all the boxes," McNeil said.
"We had a lot of good people show interest in the job, but in the end he was head and shoulders above the rest.
"He knows the players and the system and is a great clubman, so all of that is just bonus."
Roche has been among the Lions' most consistent players since re-joining the club as an assistant coach at the beginning of last year, and the 32 year old said he was looking forward to leading the side next season.
"I'm really excited about the opportunity," Roche said.
"I've been an assistant for two years and was vice captain at Barnawartha before that, and coaching is something I was always looking at.
"The club is in great shape off the field and we have a strong playing list to work with.
"A lot of things went against us this year, but we weren't far off in the end."
While Roche has moved around often throughout his decorated football career and is based in Wodonga as a detective, he said he was committed to Whorouly for the long haul.
