WANGARATTA trainer Daniel McCarthy believes the recent form of his gelding Undercurrent could see him race at Flemington on Melbourne Cup Day.
The five-year-old won its third race in a row at Wangaratta last Monday when he took out the $12,000 National Centre for Equine Education Handicap (1000m).
In seven starts since joining McCarthy's stable, Undercurrent has won three times and also had a second, third and fourth finish.
McCarthy, also a part-owner of the gelding, said he was rapt with how his galloper had been performing.
"We are ecstatic with him," he said.
"We didn't pay a lot for him but he's been a lot of fun," he said.
"He's not a world beater but he tries so hard.
"He's a real professional little horse, he does everything right and for me he's easy to train."
However, while Undercurrent has been in super recent form, his career hasn't been without its troubles as he endured plenty of problems with his legs in his early years.
But McCarthy said he had been patient with the gelding and said having previously trained Undercurrent's half brother, who had similar problems, meant he was able to get him going consistently.
"I've certainly modified his training," he said.
"I've only got two horses in work so I've been able to take the time to get an understanding of how to get him right.
