NORTH Wangaratta has put the turmoil of last pre-season behind it by signing David Steer as its coach for the 2012 Ovens and King Football League season.
Steer, who was originally pencilled in to coach alongside Wayne Lovett this year, chose to sit out of football for the season after a contractual dispute with Wangaratta Magpies could not be settled.
But after signing as the Hawks' playing coach earlier this week, Steer revealed the year off may have been a blessing in disguise.
"It was a very trying year, but it made me keener for next year in the end," he said.
"I actually had osteitis pubis last year, and that was a worry because I was struggling to get rid of that over the pre-season.
"But I've had a few runs over the past couple of weeks, and there's no sign of that, so that's a bonus.
