IT was a beautiful autumn day in picturesque Bright on Saturday for round six in the Ovens and King league.
Bright 32 defeated by Bonnie Doon 33
Best players were Amy Harper (who won the SportsFirst award), Brenda Webster and Allie Colyer.
The Bonnie Doon A grade girls started the game well keeping up with their opponents and making the most of their scoring opportunities coming into the quarter time break fairly even.
Jaimie Anstee was running the centre well and working in with Lizzie Conrick who stepped up from 17/under to fill the WA position for half a game.
Conrick was driving hard to the ball and her positioning around the ring was terrific.
Goalers Jess Walsh and Allie Colyer were finding the ball consistently and their accuracy was good, keeping the team in contention with Bright.
Defenders Amy Harper, Brenda Webster and Maddie Shinns were getting lots of taps and putting pressure on their players and the rebounding in the goal ring was great.
After half time the girls dropped their intensity at the ball and their timing was way out, leaving the court congested and hard to find space.
Passes were predictable and the Bright girls capitalised on this, intercepting many forward moves and converting them to jump ahead on the scoreboard.
The Doon girls got a bit of an old fashioned revving at three quarter time and were told to get back out in the last quarter and fix all the basic things and do them right.
This proved to be a wake up call and the team went back out and converted a six goal deficit into a one goal win with some solid defensive work, well timed leads and strong passing.
Leith Azzopardi played a lovely half at WA and her strong attacking work in the last quarter was fantastic.
Amy Harper was dynamic in defence and her transition work down the middle was awesome, along with her continual talk and direction for the other girls.
Looking down and out with a quarter to go the girls produced some fantastic netball to bring home a very well deserved victory.
