"WE got our run back." That was the key to defeating Benalla All Blacks on Saturday, according to Whorouly coach Brendan Roche.
After looking flat footed and hesitant at times against North Wangaratta last week, the Lions rediscovered their running game against the Panthers, resulting in a four-goal win.
Roche said the side had worked hard on its deficiencies following the loss to the Hawks.
"We filmed the game and had a look at it, and it was quite surprising for a lot of blokes," he said.
"There were times there where we thought we had control, but we would just turn the ball over, which led to scoring opportunities for them.
"In the end the margin could have been quite a bit more."
Apart from regaining their run, Roche said the Lions made several other improvements in the way they went about their game against the Panthers.
"We used the ball a lot better going forward," he said.
"We were much more direct, and that made life easier for Richie (Leahy).
"He was able to capitalise on a lot more chances."
Leahy was once again the dominant forward on the ground, finishing with nine goals to take his season tally to 73 from 10 matches.
