GOORAMBAT caused the upset of the Ovens and King round on Saturday when a couple of Papua New Guinean recruits helped it record its first victory over Bonnie Doon in a number of years.
Stanis Susuve and Ali Kinda were outstanding in their one-off appearance for the Bats while Dayne Webber (four goals), Damien Gray (three) and Hayden Kelly also starred.
Goorambat led by two points at the first change but kicked a stunning 17 goals to six after quarter time to rout the Doon Dogs 19.10 (124) to 8.9 (57).
Bonnie Doon was missing star forward Matt Stevenson and classy midfielder Daniel Fletcher but Bats coach Greg Vallender said he was rapt to get the four points.
"We had a really good win," he said.
"It was validation for all the hard work we've been putting in.
"It gives the boys a fair bit of relief."
Susuve, a former Gold Coast listed player, played on the wing and racked up the touches while Kinda was resolute at centre half back, cutting off a number of Bonnie Doon forward entries.
"They were a class above anything we've seen down here," Vallender said.
"They run hard, but they stay in the contest until it's over and they can't get it.
"Ali was the dominant player on the ground."
Vallender said while he would like to have Kinda and Susuve at his disposal again this year, he was hopeful the club would be able to entice the duo to return full time in 2013.
"At this stage it was a one-off appearance," he said.
"But the view is to try and get them playing next year.
"We thought it would be a good move because in the off-season when we speak to them it becomes a bit more personal."
While Bonnie Doon coach Darren Wheeler kicked five goals and ruckman Jarrod Demarco was brilliant, the Bats were able to pick the Doon Dogs off by causing plenty of turnovers.
Vallender said after a tight first quarter, the Bats lifted their intensity in the final three quarters.
"Our attack on the ball was a lot better after quarter time," he said.
"We closed them up a fair bit and kept the pressure on all game.
"We were able to capitalise on their turnovers."
